timber anyone?

imgp1071sm.jpg

Geoff, our timber frame man, helped us make a prototype column-beam connection, which we hoped would convince our more skeptical structural engineer from Arup. We solved a few details in the design that had been keeping us awake at night, and FINALLY agreed on a timber structure that satisfied (albeit only just) our Arup man.

Design session on the M1

James, Peter and Sarah make time for a quick one on the M1, in the traffic on the way back from Dan’s office in Bradford. You just can’t stop us..Peter sketches out a new roof detail in light of comments from Dian.

Meeting with Dian

We then went to Dian Coleman at Arups to discuss the structural design of the scheme. Dian told us that we needed to pin down the building better, due to the possibility of the columns splaying out, or the builing being picked up by the wind. We need to reduce the number of joints that need to be done on site, the conditions in the workshop will be more favourable to making strong accurate joints in the wood. We will also need to brace the structure in each direction.

Meeting 09.10.07

We met with Jeremy Till and Dan and to discuss the design.

The main outcome was that we should simplify the building as far as possible, and use 3 main components of the building; the roof, and panel walls and a textile bale wall. We should then split into teams in order to develop the design further.

Design Development

Following the meeting with Dian, we worked on the structure, and at how the joints between our composite columns and beams would work. We also picked carpet tiles and some machined plywood from sources found on the whywaste website.

We then looked at different ways of using the tiles for the roof, which involved a number of 1:1 prototypes.

Meeting with Geoff Stowe

The 5th and 6th years met with Dan Tiernan and Geoff Stowe- the timer frame expert, to progress the design. We presented the current scheme to them, and they were generally satisfied with the progress that had been made. We then looked at the design in more detail and how it would work, Dan and Geoff make a few design suggestions, for example feathering the carpet tiles on the roof in order to chanel water away from the edges.

At this point in the meeting Dian Coleman from ARUPS enters and we discuss the structure in more detail, and we arrange to email Dian more information later in the week.
